The central government on Thursday said that it has booked 30 crore doses of Hyderabad-based Biological-E’s Covid vaccine. Meanwhile, the vaccine is still in clinical trials. The health ministry will also make the advance payment of Rs 1500 crore to the company. Hyderabad-based vaccine manufacturer Biological-E will manufacture and stockpile vaccine doses by August-December of this year and the doses are likely to be available in the next few months. This is the second indigenous vaccine after Bharat Biotech’s COVAXIN.
The Phase III clinical trial of the Biological-E vaccine is currently underway in the country. Meanwhile, the vaccine has shown positive results during the first and second trials. This vaccine, developed as an RBD protein sub-unit vaccine, will be available for use in the next few months. The proposal of Biological-E’s vaccine has been sent for approval after thorough testing by the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19, NegVAC, working under the Vaccine Administration for COVID-19.
Health Ministry issued a statement in this regard:
The statement issued by the ministry said, “The proposal of Biological-E examined and recommended for approval after due diligence by National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19.” Meanwhile, mass vaccination against COVID-19 is underway in the country. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, so far 22,10,43,693 people vaccinated in the country. Out of this, 24,26,265 vaccines administered in the last 24 hours.
Over 1.34 lakh cases reported in India:
According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, India reported 1,34,154 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative count of the cases to 2,84,41,986. With 2,887 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll has increased to 3,37,989.
